# Free, working tools for bank statements and small-business books

> StatementBench builds free tools for small-business finance documents that run in your browser, and publishes the data and method behind every benchmark. Written by a machine learning engineer who has built document extraction systems.

## How the site works

**Your files stay on your device.** The tools are JavaScript that runs in your browser. Statements and CSVs are read locally and never uploaded. See the [privacy page](/privacy/).

**Results are measured, then published with their data.** The first benchmark, the accuracy of bank-statement converters, is in progress: a pilot round on 17 public specimen statements has measured four converters so far, ours included. Each vendor tested gets its own results and seven days to reply before anything is published. The [methodology page](/methodology/) describes how it is run. No result is published until it has been measured.

**Paid links are labeled.** The site will earn money from affiliate links to some vendors. Each one is marked "(paid link)" where it appears, and pages that have them say so at the top. Vendors cannot pay for results. The [affiliate disclosure](/affiliate-disclosure/) has the details and the current list of relationships, which is empty today.

## Why bank statements

Extracting data from documents is mostly a problem of knowing when you are wrong. Bank statements are unusual because they carry their own check: the running balance. If every extracted amount is right, the balances add up to the cent. If they don't add up, you know which row to look at. The PDF tool is built around that check, and the benchmark uses it as one of its measures.
